Hi Ruth, Olivia Miller (oliviamill@gmail.com) invited you to edit the folder "SUTRA-ICE RetMIP" on Dropbox. Olivia said: "Hi Ruth and RetMIP team, I have uploaded our simulation results using the SUTRA-ICE code for the KANU site to this Dropbox folder. This simulation ended up being very tricky for us without the permeability being specified, and we spent quite a bit of time trying to calibrate to a reasonable permeability. I have attached results using two permeability scenarios - one is 10 times higher than the other, and you will see the results are quite different. The files ending in ...700perm are for a scenario where the permeability is 10 times higher than the files that end in 70perm. Therefore, it did not make sense for us to try to simulate the other sites without having this parameter specified as the results are so sensitive to variations in permeability. We hope that this can open up some discussion about datasets necessary for these kinds of simulations and the lack of field measurements. We did this as 1D simulation to be more comparable to other models that may have participated in this comparison, although in reality the processes controlling the results are 3D, and we feel that this simplification likely results in inaccurate characterization of a number of key parameters, including permeability. We also had to modify hte code to generate the required outputs and although we have tested thee code, there may be some errors. One significant difference between this code and other firn model codes is that SUTRA-ICE does not account for new snowfall or move the firn column down - therefor, the depth of each result is the same throughout the simulation even though in reality the firn column moves down due to compaction, etc. Looking forward to continuing this discussion and hearing what you plan to do with these results. Sincerely, Olivia Miller and Cliff Voss "
